Did SXSW/’the internet’ get ‘too urban’? [via netstream hip_hop]
‘Kriss Kross played SouthBi?’ -dated old guy joke
I was at SXSW last week. It was lame. One thing my auth / alt-leaning / net-stream friends all agreed upon was that ‘there were way more black people walking around’ than years before. Not just black ppl, but also the genre of white ppl who think that they can ‘dress like Kanye West/Justin Bieber’ and nod their head to the popular rap song.
Like, there were street vendors selling unlicensed SXSW t-shirts as if it was ‘a music festival’ with ‘a lineup’ or something. It was super weird. Who the eff would wear a SXSW t-shirt?
I wondered if it was just ‘because I am older’ and ‘out of touch’ with ‘youth culture’, therefore I am eager 2 try to make my ‘youth culture’ context seem more meaningful. However, several unbiased ppl said, “Yes. There are tons of URBANZ at SouthBi… and I’m not talkin about the chill urbanites who are helping 2 gentrify communities [via displacing minorities].’
Please understand that I am already aware that:
-I am a minority, therefore I am allowed 2 talk about whites/minorities/racial issues
-SXSW is stupid
-SXSW doesn’t ‘break’ any bands
-‘real influencers’ don’t go to SXSW. Most only do to participate in sponsored brand activations that they sold to some shitty mainstream brand who thinks SXSW still matters.
-Much of this is coming from dealing with my previous blog HIPSTER RUNOFF becoming an irrelevant cultural mechanism and dealing with the fact that Carles.Buzz will never ‘scale’ into these audiences.
YOUTH CULTURE = the most generically scalable slice of POP CULTURE?
SXSW as a scalable mechanism.
What do the 4 letters ‘sxsw’ even mean? They are just a branded experience that cause ppl who ‘didn’t go to SXSW’ to have FOMO [via fear of missing out]. Nothing really happened. No1 had fun. Brands didn’t gain anything. Media content farms just got coverage. No small_scale bands made any money. Tech startups may or may not have received ‘buzz’, but their products aren’t any more useful. It is just an attention economy that is ‘as relevant’ as the Gathering of the Juggabros.
It felt like a new vibe of ppl were at all of the mass free events like ‘the Fader Fort’. Is there some theory that ‘poor ppl’ will eventually find out abt free things [via welfare/food stamps/disability/government_assistance] and then ruin those free things, giving them a bad name 2 ppl who ‘work’ 2 pay 4 things?
Did that ‘urban guy’ who plowed thru ppl at SXSW last year give the festival too much buzz with World_Star_Hip_Hop style audiences?
Theory: If SXSW is an event fueled by cultural content farm buzz… the majority of ppl who real cultural content farms thrive on ‘hip hop coverage’ [via the Negrofication of Pitchfork Theory]. Therefore, to enable the greatest amounts of internet_buzz, hip-hop acts were ‘essential’ in facilitating the internet buzz circle_jerk cycle.
Rap is ‘obvi’ more popular than even the most scalable of indie bands. Fans of scalable indie bands would rather just pay to see their fave mnstrm indie band at a price-protected amphitheatre. Tweens who like alt rock don’t even know what SXSW is, they are mainly there 2 see Bleachers at the MTVWoodies.
Youth culture is dependent upon cultural experiences 2 feel connected ‘something bigger than themselves.’
Cultural content farms utilize the ‘hype’ of live cultural events to create ‘popular artists’ who facilitate community connection.
‘Fame’ as perceived by youth culture is tied into social media mentions/ follower counts / Facebook feed algorithms based on your likes/friends.
N e ways…
I think SXSW is basically just a hip hop festival. #youth_culture doesn’t really know how to get excited about the scalable indie of yesteryear. Was just weird for me to witness it in person instead of just seeing the shift on the internet.
What is the current youth culture paradigm?
Are ‘hip hop heads’ just more noticable?
Are they just ‘louder’?
While this isn’t really a racial thing, nor am I saying ‘SXSW should be whites only’, I am only really saying that white youth culture has not utilized the internet to create a tier of.
Does n e 1 know of any auth remote festivals where true artists go?
Does n e 1 know a kewl technology conference where no1 uses mobile data, electricity, or depend on scalable social tools?
I just wanna auth out ///
I wish I ‘got’ the hottest ticket
Is SXSW officially a ‘hip hop festival’?
Has it finally been ‘so free’ that the ‘leeches of society’ have descended upon it?
Are the same ppl who go to SXSW the same ppl who ‘watch Catfish’ [via MTV]?
Now that ‘every1 reads the internet’ are cultural content farms just dependent upon human trends with the widest reach [via hip hop + r&b]?
Did yall see Miley at the Fadesy Fort with Mike Will Made It? What a moment! Gonna tell my kidz about it, like the time I saw Panda Bear play out Person Pitch.
Will Social Media ever die?
Will SXSW die when social media dies?
When will a new paradigm of scalable culture emerge?
Will it be on the internet?
Will a segment of the population eternally live with their lives #influenced by social media?
Is it a real shame that Bobby Schmurda is in the slammer so he couldn’t get SouthBi buzz?
Where is the centre of the world?
Every1 who reads carles.buzz is insane
Not part of mass culture / pop culture / nestream culture
We r so effed
This is all we have.
thank u 4 giving me the strength 2 go on
Knowing ur out there makes the world a better place.
- Did u hear abt the SouthBi Buzzband?
