I’m pretty sure this is just some severely misguided kids looking for some meaning in life who just happen to talk the same way that carles does (or vice versa.) And if not, well congratulations “auth.” You can now join heavy metal, dungeons and dragons, video games, gangster rap and a thousand other trends that that have doomed the youth of the world.

But let’s take “nothing matters” at face value here. It’s not like carles is the only cynic in the world. And that message is not too far removed from #yolo in what it ultimately justifies: culture that offers no deeper meaning than feeling good now. I think a lot of people right now are feeling that capitalism and western society is at best meaningless and at worst hostile to what they consider a real standard of living. Of course not everyone is going to come out on the side of embracing nihilism in the almost zen, live and let live way that carles espouses. Some people are naturally going to respond to a meaningless world by aggressively, even violently, reasserting meaning into their lives. Any two bit propaganda machine that promises an authentic alternative to an empty society is going to find an audience with dissatisfied, unhappy youth.

(To be honest though, corporate, drug addled, music festival culture might be intellectually and emotionally bankrupt, but I’ll take it over beheading infidels in the fucking desert any day of the week.)

Human brains simply did not evolve to grasp time frames that make our own lifespans seem microscopic and pointless. Yeah, our sun will someday flare up, engulf the earth, and ultimately flicker out billions and billions of years before the long slow heat death of the universe but fuck it, man, I need to figure what I’m going to have for lunch. I have to be at my sister’s wedding next month or my family will be disappointed and sad. I can’t go out of town for 5 days; my dog will miss me. We think in time frames where our actions do have real meaning for us and those around us. The hard truth of the universe’s emotional detachment towards us is always going to be incompatible with human nature.
