R u ‘sitting this 1 out’? [via culture]

dressed-cool
It’s so weird to have grown out of a world where one can identify anything/any1/any vibe as being ‘kewl.’ There is no ‘common interest’ that I can share with some1 else. The only ‘cultural touchpoints’ that can unite other ppl are #scaled cultural memes/humans that are #obvious.

I saw some1 under the age of 19 in an Arcade Fire REFLEKTOR tour shirt. I wondered if they ‘genuinely’ identified with the Arcade Fire’s themes/lyrics/vibes? Did they ‘get’ their career? Did they #long to be a part of their indie rise post-Funeral, romanticizing the bygone indie era? Did they think that the ArFi were ‘still relevant’ or did they just like music festival headliners, arbitrarily influenced based on their generational relativity? Would the Arcade Fire be ‘romanticized’ like some1 who listened to the white ppl art-rock band from another generation THE TALKING HEADS?

Do u ever see culture happening and think…
‘I’m glad I’m sitting this 1 out.’
sit-this-one-out
But maybe culturally ‘sitting out’ every phase
is just what uncultured suburbanites do
or maybe they are ‘all in’
on their uncultured way of life
eating casseroles made from Grands Biscuits and Manwich
They dont even know what umami is

The way to fight against it
Is 2 create
but creating means reaching ppl
‘getting them angry’ by challenging what they ‘honor’
But more often, getting ‘rejected’ by not conforming
to the zeigeistian expectations of ppl who think they are ‘interesting’
but they are actually just post-Netflix content consumers who view the internet as a content consumption machine

I can’t be excited about sharing anything with any1.
I am skeptical abt being able to ‘connect’ with n e 1.
I am unsure if there is a context where I am supposed 2 be.
I am skeptical abt the intentions of ppl ‘close’ 2 me.
I am certain there is no sense to make in the forced relationships with ‘loved ones.’
‘Good friends’ are merely ties to eras from the past, trying to fit their way into the present.
Many ‘artists’ that I meet are only interested in replication of aesthetics.
I know that I am only capable of replication and imitation of existing and iterative concepts.

I wish I could be #yung and naive again. Back when I thought there was ‘a world’ beyond the culturally relative concept of suburbia.

Anything that I will be ‘in2’ won’t scale.
I would prefer that it doesn’t ‘scale’

Ppl who take pride in their retail decisions are ‘insane.’
Ppl who ‘look forward’ 2 mass cultural events r ‘dummies’
Ppl who want to have a cold beer in their hands at an outdoor event/patio?
Boring girls in2 weed and content streaming?
Boring bros talking about comic book movies?
Ironic Jurrasic Park moviegoers who ‘believe that they have a strong connection to the movie from youth?

Off topic, but is Pitchfork still an imposing entity? I remember a time when it seemed to have a stranglehold on music criticism, and many feared that it would sink bands who didn’t conform to its aesthetic preferences (creating a bland, homogenized musical landscape in the process). It appears that music criticism has become more egalitarian since 2k10, though I could be wrong.

    • Brobro

I think you’re onto something as there doesn’t seem to be one tastemaking source anymore. However, it seems like a more connected group of people on on social media get behind an artist and it kind of snowballs. Off the top of my head, that’s what it seems like happened Kendrick Lamar, Jamie Xx, Daft Punk-RAM, Run The Jewels etc. Maybe my examples aren’t the best, but it still seems to me like you can’t “be in to music” and dislike those musicians. Maybe it’s just a problem that’s unique to me and my compulsive Twitter use :/

      • Chris

True, but you also have plenty of major sites like The Quietus, who are heralding uber esoteric bands, while pissing on those big names.
All in all, diverse criticism means a more diverse group of musicians get air space. Thankfully, we seem to be heading in that direction.
When Pitchfork announced their film site (and other sister sites) way back when, I feared that they would take over the world. Imagine, a legion of suave, shutter-shaded slackers playing their bleepy bloops and overly-reverbed geetars into Oblivion.

  • Edward Banger

It seems like the “sitting this one out” feels might come from society’s expectations on our age group in 2k15. I assume Carles is the same age as me (via late 20s/early 30s) because I connect with what he’s saying. For the last millennium it was expected that after ur wanton youthful phase the next movement was making a bunch of babies and acquiring mad cash and equity (via keepin up with the jones’).

Now we have a generation where ppl don’t have kids till their late 30s, having no money but pursuing your dreams is noble, etc. There’s no defined culture to assimilate to, but as a result there’s no defined culture to create a counter culture.

It’s easy to be punk when the only alternative is corporate suit. It’s easy to be indie when the only alternative is mass brick n mortar retail normcore. How do you defy culture when you now have information and access to every scene on earth thx to global communication and rapid scalability of ideas? I have no idea.

I’m in2 things where sharing information through the internet is either physically impossible (no G3 hotspots yall) or the participants are too poor/unaware to access it. Seems like the only way to achieve a chill connection with a group of humans.

    • HOMOSAPIEN_FUCK

Dudde this is a piece of art,,, what the hell does it mean..and my computer is like moving in and out at me… I feel like you cracked a part of culture open here. I am thinking about the sad person behind their computer who wrote this… but he also has no idea what he talks about, just says stuff and then says I have no idea… This comment alone encapsulates the time now, wanting to get super into something but then reading the scene as it is now, and just saying fuck it to all of it,… we can only take bits of culture now…. sub structural scroungers. Do go full blown indie boy, edm bro, rock guy, sad smart tech abstract teck music maker… these are all characters… and like a video game you get to chose which you want to be and who you will go around talking to….. it will throw its dramas at you which could end up very uncomfortably…or oyu get a wife.

I want a wife, I’mm on sleeping medications (via requim for a dream) so I am being so loose right now.

Wowo it would actually be tottatlly groovy to bring back 60’s slang. Say it! It’s fucking fun!

      • dat_bro06

Thank you 4 giving Edward BB the “proper props”. I vibe to the comments made by both of you. And always much <3 for my man, the HOMOSAPIEN FUCK. I have often commented to Carl that the future of auth is in loose p2p social networks as opposed to the traditional public internet, where A/B tests and viral phenomena cause everything to become mass-adopted / replicated everywhere u look — and I feel this gets to the non3G/ share everything context yall describe.

So, p2p… even if it depends on 'scalable technology' built by the high profile Silicon Valley company

I feel as though the commentariat has calmed down and begun to point its needle in the correct direction: true north / n-auth (not nauth). We are level headed articulators of the things that be / the way things are. Good for ya'll and us.

I have come to realize that there are a handful of forms of an authentic life. A non-definitive list:
    • Conquerer/revolutionary is the greatest if you have the valor.
    • Monk/prophet/etc. is second best if that’s just not your thing.
    • Lover if you can’t believe in “big” god but have the fortune of meeting a little one.
    • Weary aimless wanderer is the way to go if you don’t have that fortune.
    • Criminal if you’re stuck in one place.
    • Artist works if you’ve got don’t quite live any of these all the way but have good phenomenological insight into one or more of them, e.g. Homer, Bach, Petrarch, Villon, Sade, respectively, off the top of my head.

On the other hand, you can live inauthentically, which has its own flavor, because there is a stifled kernel of authenticity in there. Generally “successful” fall in here, as do most “artists,” as their motives are egoist ones like “fun,” “personal fulfillment,” or falsely-promised “pussie.”

Then of course there are the sub-egoists who don’t really enter into the problematic of authenticity.

I am on a Sophist path, but I’m keeping Criminal marked on the map. It is a matter of opportunity, I think.

the fortune cookie with the weary wanderer is the lone dark wolf of a trapped conglomerate of strangers asking all kind of questions that means talking strange fruits from time to time.
the lover is the dearest one. i miss him i miss him so much.
i know several phrophets, they are amazing. mostly artists which are outgoing on some levels. the monks are the fighter i experienced.
conquerer revolutionary makes me think a lot about movie industry and how the capture a timespan.

It’s been a while since Intro to Philosophy, but didn’t Heidegger already pretty much cover Auth vs Nauth?

      Dear Carles,

“[…] the commonplaces of the Wasteland outlook, the cheap mental stimulants of Alienation, the cant and rant of pipsqueaks about Inauthenticity and Forlornness. I can’t accept this foolish dreariness. We are talking about the whole life of mankind. The subject is too great, too deep for such weakness, cowardice — too deep, too great […] It torments me to insanity that you should be so misled. A merely aesthetic critique of modern history!”

indie used to feel like u were sitting this one out by being in2 stuff that the mainstream world didn’t know/get/understand, but we might’ve been hoodwinked in our teen years in2 thinking that by not having the perspective of older ppl who had open minds and kept participating in the modern world enough to cherry pick or become affected by new art that finds you in the world after your teen college child years. what kind of phony shit would it be to still want to fit in after for better or worse, you ‘know thyself’

been vibing to my musical usual suspects and auditioning new things to vibe to. sun kil moon, mirah, hauschka, chris thile, mr twin sister, stars, and the pantheon of artists who died or are older now or were from another time. in the stuck up indie community everyone wipes their ass with the artists you love and u should care what they think like an alt lemming.

been vibing to ‘the orphan masters son’ and ‘the goldfinch’ book novels. if u wanna feel like an outsider, try talking about books with ppl

the thing i’ve vibed to most this year was going deep with WW1 history [via Apocalypse ww1, The Dan Carlins, Prof. Vejas Gabby Liulevicius, Jacques Tardi war comix]. u ever think about what would happen if 37 million late teens to early 30s guys were ground into burger meat in 4 years?

Why do I find the cultural analysis proffered here to be more incisive than any comparable academic aesthetic theory, historical or contemporary. Each Carles.buzz post is worth at least a chapter of Bourdieu’s La Distinction. Or Carles.Buzz is the new “French moralist” like Diderot’s Rameau’s Nephew, reflecting on the psychoses of his age.

Are visitors of this site familiar with le Neveu Rameau – the character was Diderot’s way of commenting on the destructive impact of modern consciousness on the moral/spiritual fabric of French society. Rameau wants to be a priest / criminal / prince /lover / soldier / chevalier / gambler / virtuous / decadent etc. – but cannot seem to build the “character” and “experience” that would be necessary to have the “authentic” feeling (romantically) attributed to any of these types (now lifestyles). Is this not analogous to the contemporary conformist shaving with a blade rather than a Mach 3. I think that our “our” predicament is the same, only more severe. We inhabit a totalizing capitalist system accompanied by a postmodern junk culture, trying to find a shred of “content” within it that has not been desecrated with the Silicon Valley lifer stamp of approval. I think of Carles like the Rameau of 2015 but much funnier and more depressing.

Here are two quotes I would like to share with you all.

“If all forms of utopian thinking have been debunked and have lost their former
validity, what has become of all those human needs that once found expression
in revolutionary movements? What has happened to all those burning questions,
and are they not the questions that remain urgent for today’s supposedly
depoliticized youth? It is now beyond dispute that the current fashion of
pseudo-scientific economic fetishism will, if unopposed, simply assimilate and
colonize everything that is not defended against it. What counted as genuine
knowledge [Wissen] at one time, in turn, is now nothing more than
a clean conscience [Gewissen]. Something illusory, something of mere
semblance, clings to it. To respond to the question of why society seems
prepared once again to surrender itself to the purely superficial and illusory,
an analysis is necessary of those forces that had struggled to hinder this
    “development.”” – Richard Lehun

Your head is full of cares about a world whose history has gone awry…. Everyone who writes to me sighs and complains. That is too stupid. Don’t you realize that the general smash-up is much to great to moan about?… I can get upset if Mimi falls ill or if something happens to you. But if the whole world gets out of joint, then I try to understand what has happened and why it has happened, and if I have done my duty then I feel relieved again. Ultra posse nemo obligatur. And then once again I have everything that I enjoy: music and the clouds and botanizing in the spring and good books and Mimi and you and so many other things… I’m rich and I think I will remain so forever. To abandon oneself completely to the calamities of the day is intolerable and incomprehensible. Think with what calm composure Goethe looked at things. And remember what he experienced: the Great French Revolution – and seen up close it must have looked like nothing more than a bloody and useless farce. And then from 1793 to 1815 an uninterrupted chain of wars until the world once again looked like a mad-house. And with what calmness and intellectual serenity he continued his studies on the metamorphosis of plants, on chromatology, and on a thousand one other things! I don’t expect you to write poetry like Goethe’s, but you can adopt his attitude toward life, his universality of interests, and his inner harmony – and least you can strive to attain it. And if you say: But Goethe was not politically active, then I say that a political fighter needs to be able to place himself above things even more urgently, or he will sink into the trivialities of everyday life up to his ears. –Rosa Luxembourg to Luise Kautsky 1917

    • Jonathan

      Break it down 4 us

    • marrr

Thanks for this..To add up to your first statement here – I think the advantage of Carles’ writing is that it lacks the ‘academic distance’ in the manner of expression. As much as it criticizes popular/contemporary culture, it also appeals to it more and succeeds to demonstrate, perhaps, a better approach.

Carles, I feel exactly like what you feel, except about yogurt. I used to rush to the dairy aisle every Saturday night to get the latest cups of Dannon (via “the Flavah Cannon”). It was 2011. It was suburban/white people urban America. Do U remember when:

They made the peel-off lid overhang the plastic tab just so for easy grippin’ and appeallin’ peelin’?

They raised the roof on taste by miscegenating bananas and strawberries in the same cup? Our parents were all like “Aaargghhh kids!” but knew that their tired old ways were falling away in the light a new dawn of forbidden taste sensations.

They mixed the fruit and yogurt elements together into a smooth, homo-geneous creamy whole. The rainbow-colored fruit in the bottom rose up to join the oppressive white upper class! Huzzah!

But now the yogurt aisle is full of little punks buying corperate “Greek yogurt” in weird packages with frat letters all over them, and I just can’t care anymore. I guess they like it or whatever, but they will never understand how we consumed REAL CULTURE.

Online mass-content is one giant circle of advertising ladened rabbit holes.

The content creators are all of us, posting our comments, selfies and home-movies of police brutality, so that advertisers can profit from what matters most, what we think is auth, without them having to pay consultants to determine whatever that is at any moment.

To post it to be part of it, is to agree with it.
I am an unpaid content-creator for the advertising giants.
Are my ‘ups’ and ‘likes’ a validation of my worth?
Or, are they a signifier of my economic value to the greater economy?

    I feel used.
I too want to sit that out.
    But I want to create.

Why does creating mean reaching ppl?
I get that art can mean to challenge the world.
To get them angry, and feel uncomfortable.

But sometimes creating just means putting down what you are going through
so you can look at it, and better understand it.
But that’s not the same as sitting it out.

I’m pretty sure ‘sitting it out’ here refers to the relationship with society that we have and whether or not we choose to take part in social phenomena. Creating to observe and understand yourself is an introspective thing that doesn’t involve others considering their participation in a certain society, if at all – so it is a kind of ‘sitting it out’. It’s a figure of speech after all so it doesn’t imply total passivity of an individual.

I really like that. I want to be sure I understand it. So, would that be a participatory ‘sitting it out’? As sort of act of social disobedience, as opposed to civil disobedience?

I have to get my head around that. I’m liking that.

        • marrr

Yep, I guess that would be it. You are ‘allowed’ to do your very own stuff excessively while ‘sitting it out’ ruthlessly. And yes, it’s mostly perceived as social disobedience.

Carles, do you read The Awl? What do you think of The Awl? Have you read their post about Bagels posted July 24th 2015? What did you think about their post about Bagels? Where are you Carles? Is the post about Bagels making you feel bad/like no one listens to you/like your good ideas have been appropriated and scaled? If so, chin up, Carles. It kinda matters, but not really. If not so, stay cool, Carles! You are so cool!
